about

Church of Non Believer's debut album "Birth" was born out of a very real personal tragedy. It documents two lives in turmoil, as a couple cope with the loss of a child. Deeaay and his wife lost their daughter Lily through still birth three years ago. Deeaay in is own words stated, "I wrote some of the songs during the aftermath...I don't remember writing them, I don't remember sitting down and thinking about anything...but one day I looked up and the songs were there."

Deeaay, a veteran and idiosyncratic dark poet of the Hull music scene, wrote songs as a way to be normal and breathe outside the scream of the week. Whilst many songs deal with the fallout of this devastation and other bereavements during the same time frame and the side effects of grief, there is still a feeling of hope and defiance. Survival and hope bleed into these songs. Deeaay again, "...this is not a pity party. Yes...I want to raise some awareness about still birth and the many issues surrounding these everyday tragedies for many people, but this is not a place to wallow. That's not me...I have to dig my way out; not dig deeper into the dark hole."

Dealing with issues of depression, madness, substance abuse, mortality and the search for self, CONB are a band more in thrall to literature and art rather than musical trends. Yet a black comedy, open hearted Northern honesty and varied musical approach with strong melodies are always present. These songs tell the tale, sometimes abstractly and sometimes with unnerving and disarming honesty, of this place in time. Using fragments of electronics, broken beats and layers of samples and guitars and keys, this is an immersive and dense album. Eclectic and restless, these are songs to stir hearts and minds.
